(DAYTON, OHIO) … Summer is here and at the Greater Dayton RTA that means the return of the “Read On RTA” program where bookshelves with free books for readers of all ages can be found in all five RTA transit centers throughout the following 10 weeks.

Read On RTA aims to battle the “summer slide” –the academic backslide children can experience while they’re not actively learning in the classroom during summer months. Kids of all age levels (yes, adults, too!) are encouraged to take a book and enjoy.

Beginning Monday, June 3, Read On RTA will begin distributing books for children across all five transit centers:

-              Wright Stop Plaza, 4 S. Main St., Dayton

-              Northwest Transit Center, 2075 Shiloh Springs Rd., Trotwood

-              Eastown Transit Center, 1218 Falke Dr., Dayton

-              Westown Transit Center, 122 Elmhurst Dr., Dayton

-              South Transit Center, 2730 Lyons Dr., Miami Township

This summer the Read On RTA program will participate in the national movement of “National Summer Learning Week” with a kickoff event to the annual celebration of learning on Monday, July 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Island MetroPark, 101 E Helena St, in Dayton. The celebration will include free books, summer treats, and volunteers from Five Rivers MetroParks with live animals to teach children and families about native wildlife that could be in their own backyards.

RTA partners every summer with Dayton Metro Libraries, Half Priced Books in Beavercreek, Project Read, and more in order to provide a convenient way for families to have access to books during the summer months. Through Read On RTA, the agency strives to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of children across the Greater Dayton area this summer.
